Austin Huns Defeat 2017 Rugby Gold Cup Champions, the Dallas Reds, 40-19 Huns Play Glendale Raptors This Saturday, April 15 in Austin
Austin, Texas (April 10, 2017) – “After a three-hour bus trip and arriving in Dallas to windy conditions and a hard field, the Huns set out to do what we prepared to do, and that was to get 5 points. It was a tough match against one of the strongest sides in the conference,” said Austin Huns Head Coach Eugene Eloff after marching into Dallas, Texas, and thrashing the Dallas Reds 40-19.
Just a week after winning the 2017 Rugby Gold Cup, the Dallas Reds looked to avenge their only loss of the season, which came at the hands of Austin Huns at Huns Field. The Dallas Reds came out on fire, immediately putting the Austin Huns under pressure by scoring the first try within the first three minutes, taking the lead 7-0. It looked as if it was going to be a long day for the Huns, but the Reds fiery start was soon drenched when the Austin Huns scored and converted three uncontested tries. The first was by team captain and inside center Lomani “Money” Tongotongo. The Huns second try came by way of vice-captain Hanco Germishuys via an offload by Tongotongo. The final try by winger Justin X. Hale, who snuck through the defense off a pick’n go to end the half, giving the Austin Huns the 21-7 lead. Conversions were by fly-half Timothy Guillimin.
The first half featured physical play on and off the ball, and the second half was just as intense. It was a rocky start for the Austin Huns to begin the half; miscommunication ended with two Huns colliding and knocking on the ball, giving the Dallas Reds great field position to start the second half. The Reds capitalized on the field position and scored their second try of the game, and the first of the half, just minutes after the kickoff. The Austin Huns regrouped and answered with two tries, one by winger Andrew Heller and the other by outside center Joedee Reyes. Austin Huns lead 33-12, sixty-five minutes into the match. The Reds were able to squeeze in one more try in the 70th-minute before Huns fullback Martin Knoetze dotted down the Austin Huns 6th try of the match.
The Austin Huns won 40-19, defeating the 2017 Rugby Gold Cup Champions, and taking control of 1st place in the Texas Red River Rugby Conference.
“We had to dig to get points on the board. Despite having a strong headwind to start the game, we were ahead at the half, and I knew we could hold and win the match. There were some incidents off the ball, but we kept our composure and scored a few great tries. I am very proud of the boys, and now we must prepare for Glendale at home in Austin, Texas, which is sure to be a massive game,” said Eloff.
Austin Huns D2 Austin Huns D2 clashed against the Dallas Reds D2. The Huns took a loss to the Reds back in February by a score of 17-5, and they were looking to steal a win from the Reds’ home field. Much like the D1 match, it was tough down to the final minutes, but the Austin Huns D2 bested the Dallas Reds D2 and won 36-29.
Austin Huns D3 Austin Huns D3 traveled to San Marcos, Texas, to take on the number-one division 3 seed, San Marcos Greys. It was a hard fought match against the Greys. While they left with a 78-0 loss, many players received valuable experience while playing a skilled team down to the wire.
Austin Huns Junior The Huns juniors fielded for the first time, two teams 5/6 grades and 7/8 grades. This was a round robin tournament with San Marcos, San Antonio, and the Austin Huns. Even though we lost both matches we learned a lot and the kids had a great time. The Huns have hit a milestone in our youth rugby program, and we are continuing to grow the sport with very talented young players throughout the Austin area!
