Austin Huns Stay Undefeated at Home Defeat Rugby Utah Select XV 48-22
Austin, Texas (April 3, 2017) - For their third match of the Major Rugby Competition (MRC), the Austin Huns Elite battled Rugby Utah Select XV on Huns Field at Nixon Lane, in Austin, Texas. It was a rough and physical game in which the Austin Huns Elite emerged victorious, winning 48-22 and remaining undefeated at home.
From the opening kick, Utah displayed how their physical size could create a bit of disruption for the Austin Huns Elite. Utah stole the opening kickoff and drove the Huns back inside their 22-meter line; however, the Huns defense held strong, led by the defensive efforts of captain and inside center Lomani Tongotongo. Utah settled for a penalty kick to take the 3-0 lead, 5 minutes into the match. Minutes later, the Austin Huns Elite fired back with a try from Kyle Breytenbach, who struck through the middle of Utah's defense, outrunning six players, scoring a 40 meter try giving the Huns a 7-3 lead. Austin Huns dotted in their second try just ten minutes into the match, after a grubber by fly-half Timothy Guillimin to vice-captain Hanco Germishuys.
Rugby Utah, never letting up, showed terrific effort on defense that transitioned into a dominant offense, which Utah used to rally back into the game and take a 15-14 lead. The Austin Huns responded with two more tries, both by scrum-half Michael Reid, to close out the half 29-15. “As predicted I knew Utah would come out, all guns blazing," said Austin Huns Elite Head Coach Eugene Eloff. "They are a big physical side, and they made us account for it the beginning of the match. They attacked with wave after wave, and we had to defend a lot, but we handled the pressure well and did not allow Utah to bully us physically, as they had done other teams."
Though the Austin Huns and Rugby Utah had seven combined tries in the first half, the second half was a defensive standstill majority of the half. “The second half we went to sleep a bit, we could not find our rhythm and balance, and Utah did a great job at holding onto the ball,” said Eloff. It was not until the 65th minute did the first try of the second half occur after a grubber by Huns Winger Sani Taylor to Hanco, extending Austin Huns lead to 34-15. Minutes later Kyle scoops and scores a 60-meter try, his second try of the match. Rugby Utah finally answers back with a try in the 79th minute, narrowing the score to 41-22. With four minutes of extra time to be played, Utah looked to strike, and the Huns looked to keep their lead. A dropped pass by Utah in the 84th minute leads to a 70-meter try by Hanco Germishuys and another Austin Huns win.
“There is an old saying that goes ‘the more you train, the luckier you get,' and that stood true for us today. We had some lucky bounces here and there, but every time we had a bounce we had multiple players in position to make a play on the ball. We will take the win, put it away, and start to prepare for a vital match in the conference this weekend,” said Eugene Eloff.
The Austin Huns would like to congratulate Baylor University, the winners of Saturday’s Red River Rugby Collegiate Conference Championship.
Austin Huns Elite will face the 2017 Gold Cup Champions, Dallas Reds, in Dallas, TX, Saturday, April 8, 2017, at Lake Highland Park.
