AUSTIN HUNS DEFEAT THE DALLAS REDS 24-18 AT HUNS FIELD, CONTINUING WINNING STREAK
NEXT MATCH SET FOR SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18 AT HUNS FIELD AGAINST LOCAL RIVALS AUSTIN BLACKS
AUSTIN, TX (February 6, 2017) – The Austin Huns Elite rugby squad continue their winning streak, taking the third match of their 2017 season against 2016 Red River Rugby Conference champions, the Dallas Reds, this Saturday at Huns Field in Austin with a final score of 24-18. The undefeated team is quickly proving themselves to be a powerful force in American rugby.
It may have been a gloomy day in Austin, Texas as the clouds covered the sky, but it was all bright smiles at Huns Field at Nixon Lane. The Austin Huns Elite defeated the Dallas Reds for the first time in 4 years, moving to number 1 in the Red River Rugby Conference.
The matched looked as if it would be a landslide as the Austin Huns scored 14 points within the first 10 minutes of the match, with tries by flanker Matthew “HP” Moore, and fly-half Andrew Heller. The Dallas Reds made some quick adjustments and were able to move down the field late in half, and finally putting 3 points on the board after being held out of the try zone on two separate occasions at the line, while the Austin Huns were down two players due to yellow cards. Austin Huns answered shortly after with a try by flanker Hanco Germishuys, and the Reds punched through another free kick. Austin Huns led 19-6 going into the half.
While the Austin Huns dominated the first half, the second looked to belong to the Reds. “I could see that after scoring 2 quick tries, we took our foot off the pedal right to the end,” said Austin Huns Head Coach Eugene Eloff. Poor ball handling and bad decision making kept the Austin Huns on their back foot most of the half, and the Reds were able to capitalize scoring early, bringing them within a try of the Austin Huns.
The next 20 minutes of rugby featured back and forth play, and defensive stops until the Austin Huns outside center Martin Knoetze broke through the Reds defense and offloaded the ball for a try to hooker David LeMasters. Austin Huns extended the lead to 24-13 with less than 90 seconds left in the match. The Dallas Reds get the ball inside the 22 after the Austin Huns fall to hold on to the restart. The Reds were able to take advantage of the field position and score in extra time to close out the game 24-18 to the Austin Huns.
“I’m very happy with the win. History was made because the Dallas Reds are historically one of the toughest teams in the conference, and the track record against the Huns favors them. A lot of character was shown again winning a hard-fought match, and we can only improve from here. I’m looking forward to giving the guys a short break to recover and getting back for the next game,” said Eugene Eloff.
Next, the Huns will face long-time local rivals the Austin Blacks in a can’t-miss home game on Saturday, February 18th. The game will prove to be thrilling entertainment and gripping gameplay for the whole family. Further along in the 2017 season, the Huns are set to play Rugby Utah, the Glendale Raptors, and NOLA Rugby, along with more matches with fellow Texas teams.
